Shawn Michaels vs Triple H at Wrestlemania 30?

As the biggest show of the year approaches, Wrestlemania, every wrestling fan is making their prediction for the 30th anniversary of the event. Rumors start to making their way on the IWC (internet wrestling community) about which matches will be on this year’s the granddaddy of them all. One match that is rumored to happen is Triple H vs  a retired “HBK” Shawn Michaels. With the current storyline with the Authority there’s several ways WWE can go with this match. Either it starts this Sunday at WWE’s Pay Per View “Hell In A Cell” with Michaels (being the special guest referee) screwing Randy Orton out of the title or by simply calling it down the middle. Another way this match can happen is, Mr. McMahon hiring Shawn to face Vince’s son in law Triple H, with the option of having the match for complete control of the company. With Shawn being the guest referee for this Sunday’s main event, it’s likely that this match with happen at Wrestlemania 30. Although this can be wrong, being as though there were seeds planted in late 2009 into early 2010 for a HBK vs HHH match at Wrestlemania 26 (which HBK went on to face the Undertaker and HHH went on to face Sheamus).

Let me take you guys back to 2009, where D-Generation X reunited and eventually broke up in 2010. Triple H was feuding with the Legacy which consisted of the young tag team of Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr. No matter what Triple H did, the numbers game would catch up to him and Legacy always seemed to get the better of him. He then got the help from Shawn (after several weeks of convincing him), and the 4 men battled at the summer’s biggest event, Summerslam. DX and Legacy then had several solid PPV matches against eachother. Fast forward to November where Triple H and Shawn Michaels are booked in a triple threat match against John Cena for the WWE Championship at Survivor Series. That’s where the tension seem to start between Hunter and Shawn. Seconds into the match Shawn Michaels gives Triple H a superkick (aka Sweet Chin Music), taking him out of the match for a good portion of the match.

This was a shock to everyone watching at the time. That sweet chin music came out of no where.

Let’s fast forward a little more and DX are now tag team champions after defeating the team of Jeri-Show (Big Show and Chris Jericho), at the 2009 Tables Ladder and Chairs PPV. Its now the end of January 2010, right before the Royal Rumble event. Both Shawn and Hunter are in the Royal Rumble match to see who faces either the WWE Champion (Sheamus at the time) or the World Heavyweight Champion (Undertaker at the time). The following is a playlist of what happened on the January 18th and 25th episodes of Raw and the actual Royal Rumble match.

Monday Night Raw from January 18th, 2010: After throwing Big Show and John Cena over the top rope, Triple H tosses HBK over the top rope.

Monday Night Raw from January 25th, 2010: Triple H explains why he threw Shawn Michaels over the top rope.

Royal Rumble Match from January 31st, 2010: Shawn Michaels eliminates Triple H from the Royal Rumble

Shawn was later eliminated by Batista lasting almost 21 minutes in the match.

On the February 8th edition of WWE Monday Night Raw, DX defended the tag team titles in a triple threat elimination match against the Straight Edge Society (CM Punk and Luke Gallows) and ShowMiz (The Miz and Big Show). You can see the tension building between the partners right before they lose their tag team titles.

And then there was this backstage segment:

As it got closer to Wrestlemania XXVI, it seemed like the idea for Triple H vs Shawn Michaels was scrapped and HBK then faced The Undertaker in a rematch of their match from Wrestlemania XXV match. This included the stipulation of Shawn Michael’s career being on the line in a Career vs Streak match. Both Wrestlemania matches between the Undertaker and Shawn Michaels will go down as two of the best Wrestlemania matches of all time, while Triple H went on to face the rookie Sheamus in one of the most forgettable matches in Wrestlemania history.

While most people don’t like the idea of Shawn Michaels coming out of retirement, I’m okay with this decision if HBK and HHH can produce a match like they have in the past. Examples:

  1. Summerslam 2002 in an Unsanctioned Street Fight
  2. Armageddon 2002 in a Three Stages of Hell match for the World Heavyweight Championship
  3. Royal Rumble 2004 in a Last Man Standing match for the World Heavyweight Championship
  4. Bad Blood 2004 in a Hell In A Cell match

I have no doubt that Shawn Michaels can produce a great match even after being away from the ring for 4 years. With Michaels having  the moniker “Mr. Wrestlemania,” why wouldn’t he be on the biggest show of the year, or even decade, for the 30th installment of Wrestlemania.
